Weekend Outings 2023-24
Every two or three weeks, Wilderness Kids Alexandria students get outside on a Saturday or Sunday for an extended adventure. We are thankful to the congregation of Westminster Presbyterian Church for making these Weekend Outing Adventures possible through their generous gift to Wilderness Kids.
Check out some of our great adventures from the first half of 2022 here.

If you are a parent, please take a moment to sign your child up for a weekend adventure by emailing Lauren@WildernessKidsAlexandria.org with the subject line "Student Sign Up for Weekend."

If you would like to volunteer on a weekend trip, send an email to Jerry@WildernessKidsAlexandria.org with the subject line "Weekend volunteer." Note that we especially appreciate volunteers with a car and a valid driver's license who are willing and able to drive our students to/from the outing site. If you have already completed a background check, you may also sign up via our Sign Up Genius.
Below you'll find a tentative schedule for our Weekend/Holiday Outings in 2023. We hope you can join us!
Saturday, September 16
Kayaking
For our first Weekend Outing back in school, students will get to strengthen their paddling skills as we kayak nearby. Students will get to stay cool, as the last of the summer heat pulls us into the water.
Saturday September 23
First Annual Wilderness Kids Alexandria Music Festival
For our first-ever music festival, Wilderness Kids will host multiple bands at Burgundy Farm Day School from 12-5 pm. Thanks to Burgundy for this wonderful opportunity!
Thursday, September 28
Sailing
On September 28, sailing will take us away and back into the water. Thanks so much to our partners at CRAB Sailing for getting our students out in the water, teaching them to come about and jibe, and enjoy the breeze against their skin. Our students will take the tiller, handle the sheets and enjoy the breeze and the sunshine on their faces.
Saturday, October 7
Caving
On October 7, Wilderness Kids will set off with guides to explore underground cave systems. We were excited to get our students into the caverns, where one can see the world from a whole new perspective. They will brave the dark; climbing on their hands a knees to see the wonder that is under our feet.
October 7
Hiking tbd
On October 7, we will have a second outing hiking in Northern Virginia. The details of this hike are yet to be determined; but we are sure our students will work together and work towards building a community with one another.
Sunday, October 15
Outdoor Rock Climbing
Monday, October 30
Fall Farm Festivities
We are headed to the farm to challenge our students in some friendly competition. It is our students last chance before Halloween to pick the perfect pumpkin, race through the corn maze, and learn about local working farms.
Saturday, November 11
Hiking
We will once again take students hiking in Northern Virginia. Students will learn about local green spaces, why it's important to spend time outdoors, and get a chance to connect with one another on the trail.
Saturday November 18,
Biking
Similar to hiking, there is lots of opportunities to bike local trails in Northern Virginia. We will take students out for an opportunity to strengthen their skills and gain confidence on a bike.
Saturday- Sunday, December 2-3
Camping
For our last camping trip in 2023 we are giving students the possibility to test out overnight camping. They will have the chance to put all of their learned skills to the test, and see what summer has to offer.
Sunday, December 10
Ice Skating
Students will get to expand upon their skill sets and improve their coordination with outdoor ice skating. It can take a lot of teamwork to stay upright; we look forward to seeing our students overcome the challenges the ice has to offer.
Sunday, December 17
Light Festival
To wrap up the semester students will have the chance to celebrate with winter festivities. They will get to walk amongst the lights and reminisce on the memories made with one another during the year.
Monday, July 31
Rock Climbing at Sugarloaf
For our last summer Weekend Outing we ended it with what our kids love most, rock climbing. After a steep hike up to our lines our students were rewarded with lots of climbing, racing, and overcoming new challenges.
Thursday, July 27
Zoo
After our original plans of river tubing fell through our students enjoyed an impromptu visit to the zoo. The reptile house was the most divisive attraction; many of our students learned they really liked scales and some learned they really did not....
Sunday, July 23
Patapsco Valley State Park
Students enjoyed hiking to some local waterfalls during our weekend outing into Maryland. Hiking to waterfalls, across a swinging bridge, and a quick dip in the river is the best way to beat a hot summer day.
Monday, July 10
Calvert Cliffs State Park
After a 1.8 mile hike down to the beach students were rewarded with a nice swim in the ocean. The water was cool, the shells were beautiful, and plenty of summer memories were made.
